Floral Kimono Frock With Tulip Hem, Gianni Versace c. 1980
Vibrant roses, all in different phases of bloom, are painted on the chest, hip, and lower back of this shift dress. The lower left side has a faux split, which upon closer inspection is a delicate hem folded in on itself, echoing the petal and floral inspirations of the piece.

The show opened with a series of Chubaka-esque shags in black and graphite. You instantly got the feeling that these women weren’t looking for a mate, but flesh to devour.
After the furry moment Pugh segued into thick, matte jersey fringe dresses and outerwear that alluded to the shapes and effects of active volcanoes. With fringe dripping like molten lava, these pieces were bold, graphic, and probably perfect for dancing, like 1920s flapper zombies.
“Raf Simons’ Fall 2012 collection for Jil Sander seemed to mirror the famous lines of Hamlet’s Act III soliloquy: ‘to sleep perchance to dream…’ From the series of soft double-faced cashmere coats that echoed the silhouettes of bathrobes, to the ominous final 8 looks that provided the perfect compliment to the funeral bouquets opening the runway, Simons explored the weightlessness and dread of the ‘undiscover’d country.”’

MUST READ: Voguing And The House Ballroom Scene ($39.28), available at LN-CC
Voguing came out of the extraordinary house ballroom scene that emerged in Harlem in the 1980s, in which African-American and Latino gay and transgender communities competed against one another for their dancing skills, the versimilitude of their drag and their ability to walk down the runway like a model. The wild years of voguing are captured here in hundreds of amazing, previously unpublished photographs. A visual riot of fashion, gender, polysexuality and subversive style, ‘Voguing and the House Ballroom Scene of New York 1989-92’ is also a fascinating documentary on sexuality and race.
Photographer Chantal Regnault captured the scene at its height. The legendary houses: House of LaBeija, House of Extravaganza, House of Pendavis, House of Dupree; and their legendary ‘mothers’: Peppa LaBeija, Avis Pendavis, Angie Xtravaganza, Dorien Corey and Paris Dupree. Twenty years afterwards Regnault revisited the ballroom community to interview veterans of a scene that continues to evolve, mutate and redefine itself in the 21st century.
